Sign-up and joining

People get an account in a few ways: they sign up themselves on your public site, you invite them, or they sign in with an outside account. This page covers how you control public sign-up. You set it on the Sign-up card in Settings → Site. The same settings also appear in your site’s Site ConfigWhere your site's settings live in the admin, gathered in one place and grouped into sections by the part of the product they affect. Most settings have a site-wide default and can be overridden for individual events; a few are managed by EventDrake and shown as read-only., and the Settings page is a quick reference to them.

Settings → Site → Sign-up

The Sign-up card: a choice of mode, and the one field that mode needs.

  1. Go to Settings → Site.
  2. On the Sign-up card, choose a mode:
    • Open: anyone can create an account.
    • Invite link: only people with your invite link can sign up.
    • Code: people need a shared sign-up code to create an account.
    • Disabled: public sign-up is turned off.
  3. Fill in the field the card shows for that mode (see below), then save.

When the mode is Invite link, the card shows an invite token and a preview of your invite link. The link is your site’s address, then /auth/register?invite=, then the token. For example:

https://example.com/auth/register?invite=Xk3v9QmT2bR7pLw4nC8d
  1. Choose Generate to create a random token, or type your own.
  2. Copy the link from the preview.
  3. Save, then share the link with the people you want to let in.

A token must be 8 to 128 characters long, using only letters, numbers, hyphens (-), and underscores (_). A token that breaks these rules can’t be saved, and the card tells you what to fix.

Anyone with the link can create an account, so share it only with the group you intend. If the link reaches people it shouldn’t, generate a new token and save. The old link stops working, and you share the new one.

When the mode is Code, enter a shared sign-up code on the card and save. People type the code on the sign-up page to create their account.

Booking for other people when sign-up isn’t open

Section titled “Booking for other people when sign-up isn’t open”

When the sign-up mode is anything other than Open, a person booking tickets for other people can only add attendees who already have an account on your site, or who you have invited. If an attendee’s email address has no account, registration stops when the booker submits, and asks them to check that attendee. The booker can ask that person to sign up, or contact you.

Staff with the Administrator or Registration roleAn area of access you grant to a person, such as running registration or editing your website. Roles are built in: each one opens a set part of the product. You grant roles to people, and remove them to take access away, but you do not configure what a role can do. A role is either global (applying across your whole site) or event-specific (granted for one event). can add attendees who don’t have accounts yet. To give one of those attendees a way to sign in afterwards, invite them from Users & access → Users. See Managing user accounts.

Whatever the sign-up mode, you can always invite a specific person by email. Invited people get an account regardless of the mode, so with sign-up disabled you can run entirely on invitations. See Managing user accounts.
