Terminals and peripherals
A check-in desk runs on a terminalA physical device running EventDrake's on-site software, such as a check-in tablet or a countertop unit. A terminal can have hardware attached, for example a badge printer, a receipt printer, or an NFC reader. Terminals are registered once, then paired to a station at the start of a shift. with peripheralsA piece of hardware attached to a terminal, such as a badge printer, a receipt printer, an NFC reader, or a barcode scanner. A peripheral belongs to the terminal it is plugged into; other desks use it by pointing at that terminal. attached. This page explains how each is used in the check-in flow. To register the hardware and get it working, see Physical Hardware.
What each part does at the desk
Section titled “What each part does at the desk”- The terminal. Runs the station the operator works from. With no station profiles defined, it uses a default station; otherwise it uses the profile you assign.
- A badge printer. Prints an attendee’s badge, either automatically at check-in or on demand. See Badge printing.
- An NFC reader. Writes the attendee’s details to their badge chip as they check in. See NFC badges.
- A barcode scanner. Reads the attendee’s ticket code to look them up, and can confirm a printed badge or a merch picklist.
- A receipt printer. At a merch desk, prints the picklist of items to hand over.
Sharing hardware across desks
Section titled “Sharing hardware across desks”A peripheral belongs to the terminal it is plugged into. A neighbouring desk uses it by pointing at that terminal, so two desks can share one badge printer. For a printer shared by several desks, or a single more expensive printer, host it on a print serverA terminal whose only job is to host one or more shared printers, often running headless with no operator. Print servers suit a single, more expensive printer (such as a plastic-card printer) that several desks share.: a headless device whose only job is to host shared printers. See Print servers.
Assigning a terminal to a station
Section titled “Assigning a terminal to a station”A terminal can carry a default station profile, so the right station is chosen automatically and operators do not pick one each shift. Set this under Physical Hardware. Without a default, the operator picks a profile when they sign in.
