Questions

A questionA single prompt with an answer of a chosen kind: a text box, a number, a checkbox, a dropdown, a date, and more. Questions are a shared building block used across EventDrake, for example on registration forms and at check-in. Each question has an input type (how it is answered) and a render type (how the saved answer is shown). is a single prompt with an answer of a chosen kind. Questions are a shared building block: the same idea powers registration forms, surveys, and the prompts an operator answers at check-in. This page explains what makes up a question.

Every question has:

  • A title. The prompt the person reads, such as “Dietary requirements”.
  • Optional help text. A short line under the title that explains what to enter. You can also link the help to a fuller page for questions that need more explanation.
  • An input type. How the answer is entered (see below).
  • A render type. How a saved answer is shown when someone reads it back.
  • Whether it is required. A required question must be answered before the form or step can be completed.

The input type decides how someone answers. The previews below are rough approximations to give a feel for each one, not exact screenshots.

Some input types add their own settings: a dropdown or checkbox list needs its list of choices, and a number or slider can take a minimum and maximum.

The render type decides how a saved answer appears when it is read back later, for example on an attendee’s record. Often it matches the input type (a date entered as a date is shown as a date), but it can differ: a checkbox answer can be shown as a plain checkbox or as a “Yes” or “No” label.

You can constrain what counts as a valid answer, such as marking a question required or checking a text answer against a pattern (for example, a membership number in a set format). An answer that fails validation cannot be saved.

  • Registration. Questions attached to tickets, answered by the attendee when they register.
  • Check-in. Questions answered by the operatorA staff member or volunteer running a station on the day. Operators usually sign in with a temporary session rather than a full admin account, and only see the tools their station needs. as each attendee arrives.
  • Surveys. Questions in a standalone survey.
