Placeholders and tips
PlaceholdersA marker you drop into an email template that is replaced with a real detail when the email is sent, such as the recipient's name or the event title. The editor's Variable button lists the placeholders available for the email you are editing and inserts them for you, so an email can be written once and personalised for every recipient. pull live details into an email, such as the recipient’s name or the event title, so one template can be personalised for everyone who receives it. A placeholder looks like {{.Order.Total}}, and it is replaced with the real value when the email is sent.
You do not have to memorise them. The Variable button in the editor lists the placeholders available for the email you are editing and inserts the one you pick. This page explains what is available and how to use placeholders well.
Placeholders available in every email
Section titled “Placeholders available in every email”Every template can use a set of general placeholders, including:
- Your site’s web addresses, for building links to pages on your site and to images.
- Your theme, including your brand colours, so a template can match the look of your site.
- Site details drawn from your configuration.
These are the building blocks for links and styling that follow your branding rather than being fixed in the template.
Placeholders for each kind of email
Section titled “Placeholders for each kind of email”The rest of the placeholders depend on what the email is about. Each template has a subject it applies to (its context), and that decides which details are on hand. For example:
- An order email can use the event, the order, and the recipient.
- A ticket email can use the event, the ticket, its booking type, the order, and the recipient.
- An add-on email can use the event, the add-on and its booking, the related ticket, the order, and the recipient.
- A support email can use the request, its category, and the people involved.
Because the Variable button always shows exactly what is available for the email in front of you, the reliable way to see the full list for a template is to open it and look, rather than working from a fixed reference.
Tips for reusable templates
Section titled “Tips for reusable templates”A few habits keep a template working across events and as your site changes:
- Use the web-address placeholders for links instead of typing a full address. Links then keep working if your domain changes, and point at the right place on every site.
- Use theme colour placeholders instead of fixed colour values, so a template follows your branding and stays consistent if you restyle your site later.
- Keep the wording general on a site-wide template, and add a per-event version only where an event genuinely needs to say something different. Fewer versions means fewer things to keep up to date.
- Preview with mock data across desktop and mobile before saving, so you catch an empty placeholder or an awkward line before a recipient does.
